It's not too early to make your plans for Spring and Summer 2001. We've uploaded the 2001 Whitewater Kayaking, Recreational Boating, Climbing, Rafting and Event Calendar. In addition to our 2 day and 3 day Kayaking 101 classes we are offering a special 5 day Total Kayaking Immersion class. If you would like to sample lake and river paddling try our new Lake to River Kayaking trip. Spend the morning in a two person recreational boat on Lake Isabella and then switch to a two person Inflatable Kayak and paddle whitewater on the Kern River! To ensure your spot, make your reservations early! |
Looking at weather maps you might have thought rain, or even snow, would lead the news about the 2001 TEVA Kern River Festival, but the timing was perfect and most of the rain fell after setup on Thursday and after the Rodeo Friday night. There was plenty of sun and adequate water for all events. For full results see the Kern Festival section of the KVRC web site.
Many thanks to TEVA for their support, to Terry Valle and KVRC for all the hard work hosting the event, to all the volunteers, the sponsors, the participants, and the spectators. (The Kern Valley River Council is a new non-profit conservation organization that stepped in to make sure there would be a 37th Kern River Festival.)
In addition to the TJ Slalom Classic, NOWR Rodeo, and Downriver Race, two exciting new events were added. A Head-to-Head Raft Race and a Head-to-Head Kayak Race through Ewings Rapid. The Western Regionals team trial qualifier slalom was also run.
The Head-to-Head Kayak Race was run on parallel courses, with the finals a sprint run-off between the top four boats in each class. Boats were limited to 9 ft. and under. The Mens Pro Finals was particularly exciting, including Tao Berman, Eric Southwick, Sam Drevo, and Eric Giddens. At the finish, 5th in the world slalom kayaker Eric Giddens just edged World Playboating Champion Eric Southwick for the win.

The 2001 TEVA Kern River Festival is one week from tomorrow, April 20-22. There will be kayak demos and other activities all next week, April 14-22. This year, in addition to the TJ Slalom Classic, NOWR Rodeo, and Downriver Race, a Raft Race and unique Head-to-Head Kayak Race are planned! The Western Regionals team trial qualifier slalom is also scheduled. TEVA is putting up $5000 in prize money for the rodeo, as part of the TEVA Cup Series, and $500 for the Raft Race and Head-to-Head race. For more information see the Kern Valley River Council website.
Don't miss out on the raffle for the Dagger whitewater boat of your choice! CFS? Ego? RPM? Tickets are $1 each, or 25 for $20. The drawing will be held at the Teva Kern Festival Party, Saturday night, April 21 at Frandy Park, Kernville. Winner need not be present. (As long as you put your name and phone number on your raffle ticket.) The boat will be shipped directly from Dagger. Shipping charges will have to be paid by winner. Proceeds go to the Kern Valley River Council, a California Non-Profit Conservation Organization
Temps are forecast to be back into the seventies or low eighties by next week. Warming temperatures are expected to bring the flow on the Upper Kern back up to normal April levels.
