Important information about River Notes.
Wow, check out the new Sierra snow from SQF Sherman Peak webcam #1! As much as 6 inches snow water equivalent -- about 5 ft. of snow -- was recorded by snow sensors in the Kern River basin since last Thursday.
This season's storms have been relatively cold, resulting in much more snow below 9, 000 ft. From Chagoopa Plateau (10,300') down to Beach Meadows (7,650') sensor totals are at or above the normal April 1 seasonal totals -- in some cases way above. Beach Meadows is at 143% of normal!
We already have boatable flows on the Upper Kern, and all the lower elevation snow means we should have excellent early season flows when kayaking classes and raft trips begin March 15, and great water for our Spring Sale April 5-6, and for the Kern River Festival April 19-20. Brush Creek will be cranking!
Here are the snowfall totals recorded by snow sensors in the Kern River basin since February 21 , as of about 6:00 a.m. today:

We talk a lot about the "Kern River basin" in Rivernotes. During the Winter, we frequently refer to the Upper Tyndall Creek, Pascoes, and Wet Meadows snow sensors. During the paddling season, it might be Limestone, The Forks, Kern Falls, or Kernville. Here's a satellite overview of the 1000 square mile N.F. Kern drainage area with a few of the features labeled. If you look near the bottom of the photo, you'll see Lake Isabella. We're located just north of the lake!

Important information about River Notes.
An intense Pacific storm system is moving onshore and is already resulting in rain and snow over much of California. Heavy snow is forecast for the Sierra over the next 24 hours. Good moisture, optimal orographics and strong dynamics are forecast to produce over 5 inches snow water equivalent in some locations. By Monday, most of the snow sensors and courses in the Kern River basin could be at or above April 1 seasonal norms.
