The temperature has been in the nineties the last couple of afternoons and the warm weather has helped keep the Upper Kern flow above 2000 cfs. The paddling has just been outstanding, and should be great this Memorial Day weekend.

The weather and the water continue to be excellent on the Kern River. The hot weather last week pushed the Upper Kern to 2454 cfs last Thursday (May 11). This afternoon the Upper Kern is running about 1725 cfs, the Lower Kern at Borel is about 680 cfs, and the temperature is about 85 degrees. The road to the Forks put-in is open. Time to paddle!
The most recent MEI (Multivariate ENSO Index) value of -0.07 indicates a significant weakening of a La Nina that has persisted since 1998. Whether this is an indication of a pending El Nino, or just seasonal warming, remains to be seen. Forecasts appear to be evenly divided between Neutral and Warm episode conditions prevailing this Fall and Winter. There are complex short-cycle and long-cycle relationships between sea surface temperatures and global precipitation patterns. Strong warm episode conditions generally result in increased rainfall in California and an above average snowpack. The current long lead precipitation forecast is for precipitation in California to be near climatological norms this Winter.

It looks like the Upper Kern will probably top 2000 cfs today. At 9:00 this morning the Upper was at 1968 cfs, and the Lower Kern at Borel had just been increased to 710 cfs.
The paddling has been great. The current Short Term Snowmelt Forecast from the N.W.S. California-Nevada River Forecast Center and the California Department of Water Resources forecasts flows to average about 2000 cfs through May 21. (This is a median value that assumes seasonable temperatures.)
